Bus Faces

Little girl lost in little girl thoughts at 6.30 one morning

People in buses have the most interesting expressions while they sit idle and wait for time to pass. I've had ample opportunity to avidly study the goings on in buses during my long bus journeys to college.
So of course I had to make a handbook of expressions that frequent buses. I've identified them as large families that move as one and occupy the faces and thoughts of their victims.

The Lost in Thought Family
These expressions settle in quickly and take those who wear them to far away places while gently directing them to stare pointedly at another or gaze out the window.
The Lost in Thought Family have uncountable relatives and waste no time in finding a home.

The Infinite Boredom Family
Of all the other families, this one is the least cared for and is quite dull.
It slowly plods its way around in search of a nice home and is disinclined to budge once it settles in.
People subject to Infinite boredom are characterized by a slump and a mild grumpiness around the mouth. Sleep sometimes offers to help.

The Impatience Family
Impatience finds a warm home in bus conductors, bus drivers and anyone who is anxious to reach their destinations and is stunned by how many stops the bus has to make, the number of people in the bus and the unending wait to get past a signal.
Impatience can make you yell for no apparent reason, or mumble under your breath, with an unwavering scowl on your face. Impatient bus drivers generally honk to make a point(or flash their headlights if the horn does not work) and bad mouth anyone who asks him if the bus goes where they want to go. Bus conductors perceive any remark made to them a rude one and immediately let loose a string of well-honed insults. And God forbid if you do not have the right amount of change to pay him. The other bus inhabitants who play a host to Impatience fear no one and even yell at the bus driver to get a move on. These people are quickly identified and given a wide berth by everyone else in the bus.

The Camaraderie Family
Camaraderie is a happy family. These expressions like people and the world and the light breeze around their wearers hair. People who welcome Camaraderie, merrily engage in conversation with anyone sitting with them, or with the bus conductors, and chuckle at the goings-on in the bus.

I find that Volvo buses have no character. It's best to be in a less-expensive run down bus to be a part of the little scuffles and the merriment and witness all the families of expressions doing their rounds.
Although a seat may not always be guaranteed.

  1. Really like this post Anisha. I always observe people while they wait. There is little travel by bus or train in Karachi but there are the dentist's waiting lounges, people inside airplanes, people at passport offices..Why don't you seriously start publishing? You're so good!

  2. Thanks so much Ayesha!
It's a pity that there isn't that much local bus travel in Karachi. It's such a nice way to get around and almost never passes without comical incident.
